It’s been two weeks since the €17million EuroMillions jackpot was won by a ticket sold in Ireland. The winners, who are a rather large family syndicate have come forward to claim their prize.
Their win is winning Ireland’s 15th EuroMillions jackpot
The family syndicate arrived at the Lottery headquarters in Dublin to collect their truly life-changing €17 million prize, which they won on Tuesday, February 11.
Speaking to lottery organisers they confirmed that they purchased their winning EuroMillions lottery ticket at Mulroy’s Londis in Castlebar.
This is the third winning EuroMillions jackpot ticket to be sold in the county town since the EuroMillions game was launched in 2004.
The family, who opted to claim their EuroMillions jackpot win anonymously told lottery officials that they were all extremely excited about their incredible win.
As the mother and father of the syndicate woke up the morning after the draw, they were completely oblivious to the fact that the winning jackpot ticket worth €17 million was sold locally. Coincidentally, a winning €500,000 EuroMillions Plus ticket was sold in Castlebar on the same night, and they hoped that they might have that winning ticket.
Speaking to lottery officials, the mother of the family syndicate said, “On the Wednesday morning, we heard that the EuroMillions Plus prize of €500,000 had been won in Castlebar the previous night so there was a bit of excitement knowing we potentially had a chance of having that winning ticket.
I sent my husband off to check the ticket on the computer and when I didn’t hear any reaction out of him, I assumed we didn’t win anything.
It was over 20 minutes later when I went into the room - cool as a cucumber, he asked me with a smirk, ‘How much do you love me?’ He told me to check the numbers on the ticket and I immediately checked the Plus numbers first because of the €500,000 win but we didn’t have any numbers.
It was only when I checked the main draw that I’d realised that we’d hit the jackpot! €17 million! It was just unbelievable,” she said.
The elated mum continued saying, “We were incredibly calm. We sat down quietly and we started calling all of the family to come home urgently, hinting that we’d won some money on the EuroMillions, without actually telling them how much.
Each and every one of them thought we’d won the €500,000 prize. When they finally burst through the door, one of them said, ‘Have we won the half a million?
My husband replied, ‘add on another 16 and a half million to that!’
It was a lovely moment for us all to share and it’s something we’ll remember forever.”
They didn’t say why it took them just over two weeks to claim their life-changing prize but they did say that they had to decide where to best hide the ticket worth €17 million in the meantime.
“The hardest part for us was waiting two weeks to collect our prize. You always worry about that little slip of paper and what happens if it goes missing! My husband came up with the great idea to hide the ticket on the very first page of the bible so if our house was burgled, he reckons that it’s the last place an intruder would look,” laughed the winning mother.
Plans for the future
The family told lottery officials that they decided that they won’t rush into how they will spend the jackpot and that they will return to normality once the celebrations die down.
“We’ve taken some time out to consider our plans for the money and I can assure you that we will be very sensible in our approach to spending.
The jackpot has been split amongst our large family. Mortgages will be paid and some debts will be cleared and after that, it’s up to each family member to decide on what to do with their winnings.
The best part of this win is that we are sharing in the experience together as a family.”
Couple celebrate €5,000 EuroMillions win then realise they actually won €500,000!
Another family, also from Ireland, who love to the play the EuroMillions lottery thought that they had won €5,000. While still celebrating their good fortune they were shocked to discover that they hadn’t won €5,000 but €500,000 instead!
'We just assumed that we were one of the raffle winners and I swear, we were absolutely thrilled with the five grand'
They told lottery officials that they spent the weekend celebrating their €5,000 EuroMillions win until they finally realised that they had won a whopping half a million.
Just like the previous lottery winning syndicate, this couple also opted to keep their identities private.
The husband went on to say, “We scanned the ticket on the phone App and we got this message to tell us to contact the National Lottery to claim our prize.
“There was of course great excitement when we saw that message but there was no mention of how much our prize was.
"We started comparing our numbers on our ticket to the actual results and we forgot to check the EuroMillions Plus draw!
“We just assumed that we were one of the raffle winners and I swear, we were absolutely thrilled with the five grand! Little did we know we had won 100 times that amount.”
According to the husband, he discovered the bigger win, while scrolling through his Facebook feed and came across a story about his local Dunnes Stores selling a EuroMillions Plus top prize ticket worth €500,000.
“My jaw absolutely dropped when I came across the story about Dunnes selling a big EuroMillions winner! I knew that we had bought our ticket there and it was just too much of a coincidence for it not to be us.
"After frantically checking our ticket once again, we finally realised we had won the half million-euro prize. We’re still getting over the shock.”
The couple said they’ll be using the unexpected windfall to pay off their mortgage and helping their families.
“However, we won’t be making any decision before we pack our bags to go on a decent sun holiday.”
