A EuroMillions lottery winner had the sweetest gesture when he decided to thank the staff that sold him the winning lottery ticket.
Michael, who lives in Alton in Hampshire, couldn’t believe it when he discovered he had won the EuroMillions jackpot.
Speaking to lottery officials at the time of his win, Mr Hunter said, “I scanned the ticket and it pinged! I think I was so shocked that I didn’t look at the amount, just ran into my friend’s house and asked her to check the EuroMillions numbers in the paper.
As she was reading them out I kept saying ‘I’ve got that, and that!’ It was an amazing moment but I still hadn’t worked out what I’d won so, instead of using the app again, I called Camelot who confirmed the exact amount. I don’t mind saying I was utterly gobsmacked and my friend had to pour herself a glass of wine to steady her nerves!”
Once the win was confirmed, Mr Hunter immediately started to plan how the EuroMillions birthday surprise would help his retirement. He told lottery officials that he was going to upgrade from a flat to a small house and treat those close to him.
He was presented with a supersized cheque and champagne at a handover ceremony in Farnham on Monday (December 2) and got the five-figure sum in his bank account.
Mr Hunter said, "It is a very, very big cheque, I know it isn't millions but it’s just the same to me as millions. Seeing that cheque for the first time was unreal.
"It didn't just seem like a number, it has my name on it and the amount, and that's when it sunk in. I can't stop smiling."
Recently, however, the happy 62-year-old went back to the store that sold him the winning EuroMillions lottery ticket with a big bunch of flowers and box of chocolates. The sweet gesture was to say thank you to the team at the lottery kiosk.
Life-changing supermarket trip
Mr Hunter said, “Few people will claim that a trip to your local supermarket is going to be life-changing but for me, it really was!
"I wanted to come back to Morrisons in Aldershot to give the team something to thank them for being part of my amazing Lottery winning journey.
"I also thought it was important to show that the customers they serve every day, just like me, really do win!
“I had enjoyed lunch at the Morrisons café with a friend and popped to the lottery kiosk on my way out, buying a ticket for the EuroMillions draw.
"Like 99 per cent of the population, not for one second as I put the ticket in my wallet and joked with the kiosk team about it being a winning ticket did I actually think it would be, and now look!”
Life since winning the huge EuroMillions lottery prize
Since winning the huge EuroMillions lottery prize, Mr Hunter said he still had plans to move from his two-bedroom flat to a house with a garden. However, every property he had looked at was always £30,000 more than he wanted to invest.
“Without a doubt the best part of the win has been the added security and freedom, just knowing I have that little nest egg sitting there has been a wonderful feeling but I’m sorry to report, no new actual nest for me yet!
"I’m still looking for the perfect new home but I remain optimistic and hope that I will still be moving early this year.
“I’ve also booked a couple of holidays, one to Iceland to see the Northern Lights, something that was always on my bucket list, plus a trip to Egypt for a spot of sunshine.”
“That’s the joy of the win, the freedom.”
"While I was comfortable before, I still had to manage my monthly budget wisely but now I can enjoy the little extras without having to keep an eye on the bank account quite so firmly.”
Despite his big win, Mr Hunter told lottery officials that he will keep buying lottery tickets.
He said, "I've always tried to help those around me and the community in little ways and I've always played the lottery for the same reason.
"It does so much for local projects and also the big causes so each time I buy a ticket - even those ones that don't win! I think it's a bit like putting a few pennies in the charity pot and that's no bad thing."
